Website Designers: What It Is and How to Choose It
It is very difficult to imagine a modern business without a website. Yes, this phrase is already battered, but it does not lose its relevance. Today, even private masters and freelancers are trying to create and promote their site. A modern small business often does not have an office or a store outside the Internet. In general, the question of whether a site is needed is rarely encountered by anyone.
More often I have to deal with the question of how to make a website and what is better to use. Large and often medium-sized businesses solve such issues in the traditional way. They turn to specialists who create a full-fledged website for them, help to fill and promote it. And what should small businesses do if there are no funds to pay for professional services? Most come to the option of creating a site on their own with the help of a designer.
At the same time, a person has practically no knowledge of web programming, but there is a desire to do something, study competitor sites, and an understanding of how he would like to make his site. With a competent approach, this option can and should be used. We offer you to explore different options:
8. zoho sites
If you want to do something completely yourself or just try some option and see how it will look, use site designers. We also offer you different options for designers, with their advantages, disadvantages, strengths and weaknesses. As you know, sites are of different types:
1. One-page (landing pages). Intended for the sale of a single product, advertising, promotions, etc.
2. Online shopping.
3. Multipage sites that may contain any information.
What is a site builder
In the general case, a site designer can be called any tool that will allow you to create a site without writing code. Ideally, to work with the site builder, you don’t need to know either html code or programming languages, everything should be simple and clear as possible. By design, site designers are divided into two types:
1. SAAS (cloud solutions), when all the functionality necessary for work is located on the developer’s server. All sites that are created using these designers are hosted by developers.
2. Standalon (stand-alone solutions). In this case, the user receives a designer program on some medium or downloads it to his computer. And then before you start working with the site, this constructor needs to be installed (copied) to the hosting.
Standalon solutions are usually more complicated for users, since you will need to download a special program for creating sites on your computer, then choose and buy hosting on your own, figure out what ftp is, what passwords and settings will be required to send a site from a computer to a server, etc.
And therefore, novice users mainly choose “cloud” solutions, we’ll talk about them. In addition, some CMS also offer components for creating sites, which is called without “lines of code”, but anyway, it is important to understand that in order to use them you need to install the platform, choose a hosting, install plugins, that is, it is difficult to use such a constructor for an unprepared person.
Payment for SAAS constructors
Payment for a site created using the designer is made by subscription. You can pay for several months, you can pay immediately for a year or renew the package monthly. Developers of designers usually leave this decision for you, but when paying for 6-12 months or more in one payment, some discounts and bonuses are usually offered.
It’s important to understand that as long as the period you paid lasts, users will be able to see your site. As soon as the subscription is over, your site disappears from public access. And after a while in case of non-payment it is permanently deleted. In some cases, designers also offer free use of sites. But such sites get far from the most beautiful and convenient domains of the third or even fourth level.
And the period of free access to the site is either limited by a short test period, or a lot of other people’s ads will be placed on your site. It is clear that this option is definitely not suitable for commercial purposes. For this reason it is important to choose the best price option for the designer and remember about timely payment.
Grid on the site
You can create an unlimited number of columns (website bars), somewhere you have a maximum (for example, no more than 3 columns), some templates do not work with website bars at all, since they have a strictly specified number of sections, and elements in sections do not intersect. There are 3 types of such a grid:
Classic modular grid, i.e. horizontal and vertical layout, in accordance with which the elements are located. These grids are usually standardized, and determine what your maximum site width will be, what margins are allowed between objects, and so on. For example, the Webflow constructor works with such a grid. Here, the arrangement of blocks has some limitations, for example, you can never insert a picture that will “crawl” onto another, even if for some reason you really want to.
Also, you cannot completely randomly move blocks relative to each other, you will still have a certain system – with vertical and horizontal layout, with the same columns, etc. Such a site will not allow you to be 100% imagination if you are a fan of unusual solutions, but your site will look attractive on any screen, and adaptive layout works very well with this grid option.
A grid that works only with horizontal lines, and vertical layout is set by sections of the site. Those. elements are located only on one line, you can move them left and right, but you cannot transfer an element to another line. The most stringent option, the sites at the same time are also standardized. For example, such a grid is used in Tilda, and all sites on this constructor as a result look somewhat similar to each other.
Lack of a rigid grid in general. At the same time, the site has alignment and tips, but this alignment is made relative to other elements. And there are no hard frames on such sites at all. This approach is used in the WIX constructor. The undoubted advantage of this solution is the freedom of creativity and the creation of unique sites.
But this same freedom can be a minus, since sites aligned “by eye” often look amateurishly sloppy. In addition, such design options are almost impossible to adapt, you have to separately create a mobile version of the site. Well, any creativity has its opposite side.
Availability of CMS
The term CMS stands for “Content Management Software”, which in translation means a program for managing content. In Russia, the last letter is often deciphered as “System”, and then the decoding of the term sounds like “Content Management System”. This term is voluminous, but for us in terms of working with the site builder, one thing is important:
CMS allows you to work with the site design – separately, and with content – separately. So in the absence of CMS in the designer, you need to create each page separately in a visual form, create information blocks and website bars for it, determine the design features of any elements, and so on. In some ways, it can even be convenient, since you are not limited by anything and work in a visual constructor.
And the main basic elements are the “header”, “basement”, “menu”, etc. when going to work on a new page, they are usually copied. On the other hand, CMS allows you to quickly and comfortably work with a large number of similar information blocks. So, you once create a template for the “Articles” section, where you determine, for example, the placement of text in 2 columns for each page of the article.
After that, you just need to add text (with minimal formatting), and the design of all articles in a single style will be generated automatically. Moreover, if you want to change this design option, for example, go to the placement of articles in one column or vice versa, make 2 website bars, you just need to make edits to the template once, and the content will be reformatted automatically.
If you plan to work with the site constantly, add some entries and articles to it, then the presence of CMS will be important for you. And if you create a business card website where new information will appear in rare cases, then the absence of a CMS will not be especially critical for you. There are mixed options, i.e. CMS can be used only for some types of pages, and all the rest need to be filled in visually without using a common template.
For example, in Wix Designer, you can create a template for the Blog section. And CMS will work for him, it will be possible to add similar records quickly and easily. You will create any other pages as usual. And the Nethouse designer from the very beginning himself suggests creating a template for any type of page and working through CMS. Here you can decide for yourself where and which approach will be more convenient.
Website Promotion (SEO)
Almost all site designers promise perfect promotion in search engines and fast promotion. In fact, the success or failure of your progress practically does not depend on the designer. It will be determined by the quality of your content, a competent approach to the needs and requirements of your target audience, other factors that are not related to the features of the work of the designer.
In fact, no matter how hard the designer’s developers try to talk about a unique code or a unique algorithm of work, all the sites that are created in the designers are exactly the same set of files that are stored on the hosting, like any other site. The designer simply helps to do part of the work on the site without the help of a typesetter and programmer. And the result is basically no different.
Yes, and it can not be different, otherwise neither the search engines saw these sites, nor even the browsers could read them and show visitors in the correct form, i.e. just the way you made them. Two factors depend on the developers of the site’s designers – this is the presence of a site map (by default or in the form of a plug-in), as well as the accuracy and absence of errors in the work of the designer itself, which will ensure the quality of the site as a whole, the absence of duplicate pages, etc.
Here you need to understand that at the user level, you still can’t determine the quality of the work of programmers. But taking into account the fact that the owners of the site’s designer are constantly working on improving it, any platform, except for completely new and unknown to anyone, will work qualitatively enough so as not to interfere with the promotion of the site. On the other hand, website seo optimization is a voluminous process, in some cases, experts recommend replacing automatically generated links of website pages with CNC (human-readable URLs).
And not all designers, especially English-speaking ones, will be able to provide suitable tools for such nuances. Also, some designers allow you to register seo data for the entire site as a whole, and for pages the tags are filled in automatically, which is also not always good. Other systems allow you to work with each page, but here some other nuances may arise. For example, you can’t always be able to add a counter to the site from the system you need or manually change the robot.txt file, etc.
The designer allows you to create large projects without programming knowledge, but by no means to all the features that may be required during optimization and promotion site, you will have access. In most cases, the limitations are not as important as they might seem, but it is necessary to understand all these nuances.
Non-standard options for working with designers
Non-standard methods of using site designers were introduced by web developers to facilitate their work. The fact is that any website builder creates html pages in a visual form. And if developers protect executable modules, then you can download the finished html-code along with pictures in any browser.
Moreover, many designers themselves add the ability to download the site in html format. Thus, you get a static site without CMS and some kind of interactive features. But at the same time on such a site you have a ready-made design, content filling with a convenient arrangement of blocks and graphic elements. For example, if you need a one-page page, then using the constructor will significantly speed up work on the site. In the designer, you can create almost everything you need. After that, it remains to add the executable code for subscribing or feedback to the downloaded html-site (and usually nothing else on such sites), and your landing page is ready.
Given the fact that downloading ready-made modules for such simple actions is also not a problem, this way of creating a landing page is available to any more or less experienced user. And this use of constructors also has a right to exist.
Above, we figured out the main parameters that can affect the choice of site designer. And in conclusion, let’s determine the correct procedure for successfully creating a site on the designer.
1.Collect (write, photograph, etc.) content.
If, in the usual scheme of working on the site, the designer works first, the programmers modify the functionality at the same time, and only then the content queue comes, then if you use the designer, you take the design ready, you don’t need any improvements, and therefore the content, at least in the minimum amount needed should be at hand.
2. Think in advance all the functionality you need.
Record all the features that are important to you. When choosing a constructor, first of all, you are looking to see if you can implement everything you need with the help of one service or another.
3. Choose a design.
If in the designer you still couldn’t pick up anything worthy of attention in the templates, it makes sense to also go to the next site on your list.
4. If everything is in order, you have decided on the site designer, connect the template and start creating pages.
It is very important to remember about SEO. It is worthwhile to select key phrases for your direction in advance (usually this is done using the wordstat.yandex.ru service). In the texts that you write for yourself, these phrases should be present, but without fanaticism. First of all, you write for people.
You also need to fill out all seo tags – for the entire site, for individual pages, for pictures. In site designers, they are always there and are available without problems. Importantly, do not forget that this is also important.
Rate how your site looks on large screens, as well as how mobile versions of sites look. If something is uncomfortable or ugly somewhere, be sure to fix it.
6. Turn on the site and start using it!
